is a game that helps you master the foundations of math.
Practice daily to master the basics, watch your fluency grow and tackle exciting new challenges with your math powers!
90% accuracy, 3 seconds per problem is standard for arithmetic mastery in America.
But, imagine trying to express a complex idea in a foreign language with only 90% vocabulary accuracy and 3 seconds of effort to recall each word. Difficult, right? That's what it's like to solve multi-step math problems (fractions, algebra, etc.) with mere "mastery" of arithmetic.
"Fluency" means effortless retrieval with 100% accuracy. A small, but critical step beyond mastery. Fluency Flower is a game that requires 100% accuracy from the start, while retrieval speed grows with practice over time.
Give a seed good soil, plenty of fresh air and sunshine, water it regularly and keep away the pests. Soon you'll see a sprout grow and blossom into a beautiful flower. So it is with developing math skills: a strong foundation, cozy environment, and consistent practice are all it takes for a kid to blossom into a confident math learner.
Fluency Flower intertwines the mechanics of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division with the elements of earth, air, water and fire (i.e. soil, wind, rain, and sun). The way the four elements align with the four math operations has inspired a lot of fun game design.
I've been working on Fluency Flower since 2008. From the first inspiration as a Pixar intern, to the "Math meets Zelda" adventure game built as a Stanford grad student, to Godai, the mobile math puzzler, to building and teaching multiplayer math cohorts, to my current Magnum Opus of Fluency Flower. It's been a long journey through many, many iterations to get here.
I can't wait for you to try it.
